A Complete Landscape Designed Alongside a New Sonoma County Home
This featured Windsor landscape represents more than two years of planning, collaboration, landscape design, and construction.
Moonlight Landscapes worked in collaboration with the home’s design and construction team from the early stages of the project, allowing the landscape to develop alongside the architecture of the new residence.
Rather than treating the landscape as something to be added after construction, the goal was to create a complete outdoor environment in which the home, pool, patios, pathways, gardens, and natural materials all feel connected.
The finished landscape combines modern architectural elements with the relaxed, natural character of Sonoma County.
A Two-Year Landscape Design Process
Large residential landscapes benefit from careful planning.
Over a two-year landscape design process, the property evolved alongside the construction of the new home. This provided an opportunity to consider how people would move between indoor and outdoor spaces, how different elevations would be handled, where gathering areas should be located, and how the landscape would look from both inside and outside the home.
Every major landscape element was considered as part of the overall composition.

Its placement was considered in relation to the architecture, surrounding patios, garden areas, and views across the property. Generous outdoor spaces around the pool provide room for relaxing, entertaining, and moving comfortably between the home and landscape.
Rather than allowing the pool to exist as an isolated feature, the surrounding landscape helps integrate it into the overall property.
Sand-Finish Concrete Patios
Sand-finish concrete was used to create clean, contemporary outdoor living areas that complement the architecture of the new home.
The subtle texture of the finish provides a softer appearance than conventional concrete while maintaining the strong architectural lines of the design.

The clean geometry of the concrete contrasts with the softer forms of the planting and natural stone.
This combination of structured architecture and organic landscape materials became a recurring design theme throughout the property.
Form-Board Concrete Retaining Walls
Elevation changes were incorporated using form-board concrete retaining walls, providing both structure and architectural character.
The board-formed texture gives the concrete a more refined appearance while allowing the walls to coordinate with the contemporary architecture of the residence.
Plantings and natural materials help soften these structural elements and connect them to the surrounding garden.
A Bocce Court for Outdoor Entertaining
A custom bocce court adds recreation and another gathering destination within the landscape.
Bocce is particularly well suited to Sonoma County’s outdoor lifestyle. The court provides a casual space where family and guests can gather while complementing the property’s relaxed wine-country character.
By integrating the bocce court into the larger landscape plan, it feels like another garden room rather than a standalone recreational feature.
Flagstone Patios & Walkways
Natural flagstone patios and walkways provide a contrast to the property’s architectural concrete.

Native & Sustainable Landscaping
Planting was designed around the character and climate of Sonoma County.
A palette of native, low-water, and climate-appropriate plants creates a landscape that feels natural to the setting while providing changing color, texture, movement, and seasonal interest.
Rather than relying on large expanses of traditional lawn, the gardens emphasize layered planting, natural materials, and water-conscious landscape design.

Sonoma Fieldstone Boulders
Large Sonoma Fieldstone boulders provide some of the most important natural elements throughout the garden.
The boulders help anchor planting areas, define transitions, and visually connect the newly constructed landscape to the natural character of Sonoma County.
Careful placement was essential.
Rather than appearing as decorative objects placed on top of the landscape, the boulders were integrated into the grade and surrounding plantings to create a more established, natural appearance.
